Action Comics #1 sells for $2.16 million

If you think you have some old comics sitting around in your attic or basement…you may want to see what you have. Last night at auction, a copy of Action Comics #1 was sold for a record $2.16 millon. The rare comic was actually owned by actor Nicolas Cage, who has been an avid comic collector for most of his life. The issue was stolen from Cage’s L.A. home in 2000 and just recently recovered.

The issue was graded at 9.0, making it the best copy of Action Comics that Vincent Zurzolo (COO of ComicConnect and one of the senior officials involved in last night’s auction). The previous record for a comic sale at auction was another copy of Action Comics #1, sold in March 2010, that was graded at 8.5 and sold for $1.5 million.

According to comic experts, there are thought to be approximetly 100 copies of Action Comics #1 in existance, but a small percentage of those are thought to be in good condition.
