Gadget Review: PlugBug Charger

While looking for the perfect desktop dock/stand for my MacBook, I stumbled upon the PlugBug from TwelveSouth, a South Carolina-based designer and producer of Apple accessories.

As an aficionado of chargers (really, I have a drawer full of power supplies for my various gadgets and gizmos), I had to give it a try.

The concept is simple; the PlugBug piggybacks on an Apple MagSafe power adapter, providing up to 10 watts of power through its built-in USB slot. Really, there’s not much else to it.

Nor does their need to be, either. The best gadgets are often the most simple. The PlugBug is designed to do one thing, charge your iDevice, and it does so well.

I’ve lost the little Apple power blocks more times than I’ve cared to count and have pretty much given up on buying more. The PlugBug, though, fills that void and I don’t have to worry about packing an extra charger when I’m on the road.

The biggest benefit here is keeping one of your all-too-valuable MacBook USB ports open for other uses, be it a mouse, a printer or otherwise. And with the built-in wireless sync feature in iOS 5, you no longer have to worry about swapping cables in and out.

Along with its ability to work with the MagSafe adapter, it also works as a stand-alone charger and works with the iPhone, iPad, iPod and the iPod Touch.

At $35, it’s a little on the high side as far as chargers go, but it’s elegant design, practical purpose and solid results make it a nice addition to the work or travel bag.
